UNDERSTANDING IPL THERAPY: HOW IT WORKS

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a cutting-edge treatment designed to combat dry eye disease by addressing both symptoms and underlying causes. The therapy works by delivering light pulses to the skin around the eyes, targeting inflammation — a primary contributor to dry eyes.

The light energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by blood vessels that cause inflammation of the meibomian glands. IPL shrinks the vessels and effectively reduces inflammation, enhancing the gland’s ability to produce the oils necessary for a healthy tear film. It also stimulates cell mitochondria and collagen production, improving cellular function and helping reduce fine lines around the eyes. The light treatment is absorbed by specific chromophores, which reduces redness and pigmentation, leading to an overall more even skin tone.

Moreover, IPL effectively targets Demodex mites – tiny organisms that exacerbate conditions like blepharitis and dry eyes. The treatment eradicated these mites and diminishes harmful bacteria, promoting a healthier ocular surface. Regular treatments help maintain meibomian gland function, critical for preventing dry eyes.

1. CONSULTATION

During an eye exam, Dr. Scott will determine if IPL therapy is the right treatment for you.

2. TREATMENT

Laser grade eye shields are placed to protect your eyes! A cool gel is applied around the eyes and parts of the face. You may feel a warm or tapping sensation, but the procedure is generally painless.

3. POST-TREATMENT CARE

Apply a gentle moisturizer and sunscreen directly after treatment and avoid sun exposure. Continue use of your regular eye care drops and routine.

Most patients have dry eye symptom improvement in 2-4 treatments. Cosmetic results are often noticeable after 4-6 treatments, with 6 month or yearly maintenance treatments thereafter, provides the most effective management of dry eye symptoms.
